Nationalities
University
is located at the beautiful Lotus Pond in the
northern suburbs of Kunming. It is a
comprehensive university of arts, science,
management, and languages.
The university was founded in 1951 as the
Yunnan Nationalities Institute, with the initial
mission being to train government leaders to further
the economic opportunities available to Yunnan’s minority ethnic
groups and to ensure their political rights. In
2003, the school changed its name to
Yunnan Nationalities University
and has been developing its programs and
increasing cooperation with foreign academic
institutions ever since.
Today, Yunnan Nationalities
University has over 5,000
students studying in a wide variety of programs.
The student body consists of people from
Yunnan’s many ethnic minorities as well
as
China’s majority
Han population. The university has also welcomed
students from over 80 countries to study on its
campus and has cultivated partnerships with 26
major international institutions. The course of
study offered at Yunnan Nationalities
University includes
typical programs like economics, mathematics and
history as well as ones in minority languages
and cultures that are at the center of the
university’s founding mission.
Yunnan Nationalities University
also has a library with a large collection of
ancient texts from Yunnan’s history and a large museum housing a
collection of over 30,000 artifacts that represents
the history of Yunnan’s ethnic minority communities.
