Financial
Aid Resource Center
Our resource center is designed to help you look
for financial aid and make your
study abroad in China
easier and affordable. We offer both a large directory of
scholarships which is free for everyone to surf, but with
contact information available only to our applicants. In
addition, we offer advice and some outside resources.
Minds Abroad Scholarships Directory
Scholarships which can be used on current Minds Abroad
Programs
The dozens of scholarships on this first list can be used to
fund your
Minds Abroad experience, like the Chinese
language program and many others. We share contact information only
with students who have applied to our programs first. Once you
have applied, we will begin to help you find scholarships that
are right for you. We cannot guarantee that you will win these
scholarships if you apply for them, but we will help you find
scholarships which are suited for you, and will assist you in
the application process.
Miscellaneous scholarships with which we will help students
tailor an individual program
The scholarships on this second list are for a
variety of subjects - ranging from engineering, to social
sciences, to natural sciences, and more. We realize that it
can be difficult finding a study abroad program, like Chinese
language
study, to fit these very specific
programs. Therefore,
Minds Abroad is able to
tailor specific programs for you. If you find a scholarship on
this list and win the scholarship, let us know and we can
create a program to fit your needs. Even if you are not a
winner of one of these scholarships but nevertheless want to
study a very specialized subject in China, we can help. In
either event, just contact
Minds Abroad and we can
help you tailor a Chinese lesson plan or a program to
meet your needs.
Minds Abroad Financial Aid Advice and External Links
After you have a clear picture of the program’s costs and your
ability to pay them, begin to look for other sources of money.
There are a variety of places you can look for outside help:
Federal or state financial aid
Federal financial aid is money supplied through the Higher
Education Act of 1965 to assist students in getting a college
education. State aid is similar but comes from your state’s
tax funds. You may be using financial aid already. If so, you
might be able to use that aid to study abroad.
Federal aid can legally be used to study abroad as long as the
program you attend has been approved for credit by your home
institution.
Institutional, private, and other types of governmental aid
for education
You may be receiving other assistance for your education that
can be used for a study abroad program. For instance, if you
are in an ROTC program or if you receive veteran’s benefits or
vocational-rehabilitation benefits, it may be possible to use
these funds for study abroad.
Furthermore, as a participant in the
Minds Abroad teaching program, you may be able to defer
student loans for the duration of your participation in the
program for up to three years.
Minds Abroad can provide letters of support for deferment
requests, but you are responsible for applying directly to
your lender(s) for deferral.
Your
home university
Your
home university may award institutional aid including tuition
scholarships, a merit award for good grades, etc. Some
institutions will not allow such scholarships to be used for
programs sponsored by others, but some will. It never hurts to
ask.
Most college
reference libraries have private funding sourcebooks that list
hundreds of scholarships.
